How to Use AI for Bar and Restaurant Promo and Event Copy (Check Your Alcohol Rules)
Trivia night, live music, happy hour, a chef's special: promotions drive traffic, and writing them takes time. AI can produce posts, flyers, email blasts and event descriptions in your voice. For alcohol promotions, the legal rules are local, so check before you post. This guide is part of the AI for Bar and Restaurant Owners hub.
Caution: Allergen and ingredient information must come from your kitchen and your actual recipes and suppliers, never from AI alone. Alcohol advertising, promotions and licensing rules vary by state and locality: check your state and local alcohol authority. All prices, pay and hours come from you. General information, not legal or food-safety advice.
Good uses
- Event announcements with date, time, location and what to expect.
- Variations of one message for Instagram, Facebook, email and a printed flyer.
- A weekly specials post from your list of dishes.
- Thank-you and 'see you next week' follow-ups.
Alcohol advertising: check local law
Federal alcohol advertising rules under the Federal Alcohol Administration Act mainly apply to producers, importers and wholesalers, and generally do not apply to retailers unless they also act in one of those roles (see TTB's advertising provision and 27 CFR Part 5 Subpart N). States and localities set their own rules, which can be stricter, and cover things like on-premises advertising, prices and promotions (see TTB's list of state alcohol authorities). Some states restrict certain discounts or messages, for example by limiting how prices are advertised, or by prohibiting ads that encourage excessive drinking. Contact your state alcohol authority or licensing agency before running promotions.
Responsible messaging
Avoid copy that encourages drinking to excess or targets minors. Do not rely on AI to know your state's rules or platform ad policies, which also restrict alcohol ads. Never ask AI to suggest ways around age or licensing rules.
Facts only
Do not let AI invent specials, prices, performers or hours. Provide the details, and have AI add the enthusiasm.
A promo prompt
Write three short social media posts and one short email announcing an event at a neighborhood bar and restaurant. Use only these facts: [EVENT NAME, DATE, TIME, LOCATION, WHAT HAPPENS, ANY FOOD SPECIAL DETAILS I HAVE DECIDED]. Friendly and fun, family-friendly wording, no messages about drinking a lot, getting drunk or drinking games with prizes for amounts consumed. Do not state drink prices or discounts; I will add them if my state allows. Under 50 words for each post.
Check it before you use it
- Date, time, address and details are correct.
- You checked your state and local rules on alcohol advertising, prices and promotions.
- Nothing encourages excessive drinking or targets minors.
- Platform advertising rules for alcohol are met.
- No prices or offers were added that you did not decide.
