How to Use AI for Product Descriptions (Accurate, Specific and Honest)
Product descriptions take time, and owners with dozens of items often skip them. AI can turn your notes into readable copy in a consistent voice. The danger is invented details, such as a material, size or benefit you never mentioned, and unsupported claims. This guide is part of the AI for Small Business Owners hub.
Caution: Do not paste customer personal data (names, contact details, payment or account information), contracts, employee records or tax documents into a general AI tool. Check every fact, price, date and promise yourself before anything goes out. Contracts, tax and legal questions need a qualified professional. General information, not legal or tax advice. Avoid unsupported health, safety or performance claims; for regulated products, check the rules that apply to you.
Feed it facts, not adjectives
List what is true: size, materials, color options, how it is made, how to care for it, who makes it. Tell the AI to use only those facts. Then ask for a short and a long version.
Common problems
- Invented specs (dimensions, materials, certifications).
- Superlatives you cannot back up ('the best', 'guaranteed').
- Health, safety, eco or 'handmade' claims that may be regulated or may not be true.
- Copying phrases from similar products online.
Be consistent
Create a short style note (tone, words you like and avoid) and paste it into each prompt so all your products sound alike.
A product description prompt
Write a product description for an online shop. Use ONLY these facts: [PRODUCT NAME, SIZE, MATERIALS, COLORS, HOW IT IS MADE, CARE INSTRUCTIONS, WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT]. Tone: [FRIENDLY / SIMPLE / PLAYFUL]. Output: a 1-sentence summary, a 60-word description and 4 bullet points. Do not add features, measurements, certifications or claims that I did not provide. Do not use the words 'best' or 'guaranteed'.
Check it before you use it
- Every measurement, material and feature matches the real product.
- No unsupported or regulated claims (health, safety, eco, origin) remain.
- Care and usage instructions are correct.
- The text is original and does not copy a competitor.
- Photos and text agree with each other.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI write descriptions for hundreds of products?
It can speed things up, but you still need accurate facts per item and a spot check. Bulk output without review risks errors.
Is it okay to say 'handmade' or 'eco-friendly' because AI suggested it?
Only if it is true. Environmental and origin claims can be regulated, so check the rules that apply to your products and markets.
Can AI write SEO text for me?
It can help with clear wording, but write for people first. Do not stuff keywords.
Can AI describe a photo of my product?
It may help, but it can misread details. Verify every detail against the real item.
